Behaviour of animal
In recent years it has been appreciated that the behavior of animals may be influenced not only by hormones (chemicals released I nto the internal environment by endocrine glands that regulate and coordinate the activities of other tissues) but also by pheromones-substances released into the external environment by exocrine glands that influence the behavior of other members of the same species. We are accustomed to thinking that information can be transferred from one animal to another by sight or sound ; pheromones represent a means of transferring information, by smell or taste. Pheromones evoke specific behavioral, developmental or reproductive responses in the recipient; these responses may be of great significance for the survival of the species.
          Some pheromones act on the recipient’s central nervous system and produce an immediate effect on its behavior. Among these releaser pheromones are the sex attractants of moths and the trail pheromones and alarm substances secreted by ants. Other primer pheromones trigger a chain of physiological events in the recipient that affect its growth and differentiation. The regulation of the growth of locust and the control of the number of reproductives and soldiers in termite colonies are controlled by primer hormones.
          The sex attractants of moths provide some of the more spectacular examples of pheromones. The male silk moth has an extremely sensitive receptor in his antennae for sensing the attractant. When an investigator records the nerve impulses coming from the antennae, he finds that these electroantennagrams show specific responses to bombykol and not to other substances. The male silk moth cannot determine the direction of the source by flying up a concentration gradient because the molecules are nearly uniformly dispersed except within a few meters of the source. Instead, he responds to the stimulus by flying up-wind to the source. With a gentle wind, the bombykol given off by a single female moth covers an area several thousand meters long and as much as 200 meters wide. An average silkworm contains some 0.01 mg of bombykol. It can be shown experimentally that male responds appropriately when as little as 10,000 molecules of attractant are allowed to diffuse from a source 1 cm away from him. He can have received only a few hundred of these molecules, perhaps less. Thus, the amount of attractant in one female moth could stimulate more than one billion males !.
          Sex attractants have been tested as possible specific insecticides. By putting sex attractant on stakes placed every 10 meters in a large field, investigators could blanket the air with sex attractant, thus confusing the males and greatly decreasing the probability of their finding females and mating with them.
          The fire ants, when returning to the nest after finding food, secrete a trail pheromone that marks the trail so that other ants can find their way to the food. The trail pheromone is volatile and evaporates within two minutes, so that there is little danger of ants being misled by old trails. Ants also release alarm substances when disturbed, and this (rather like ringing the bell in a firehouse) in turn transmits the alarm to ants in the vicinity. These alarm substances have a lower molecular weight than the sex attractants and are less specific, so that members of several different species respond to the same alarm substance.
          Worker bees, on finding food, secrete geraniol, a 10-carbon, branched chain alcohol, in order to attract other worker bees to the food. This supplements the information conveyed by their wagging dance. Queen bees secrete 9-ketodecanoic acid, which, when ingested by worker bees, inhibits the development of their ovaries and their ability to make royal cells in which new queens might be reared. This substances also serves as a sex attractant to male bees during the queen’s nuptial flight.
          In colonial insects, such as ants, bees, and termites, pheromones play an important role in regulating and coordinating the composition and activities of the population. A termite colony includes morphologically distinct queen, king, soldiers, and nymphs or workers. All develop from fertilized eggs. However, queen, king, and soldiers each secrete inhibitory pheromones that act on the corpus allaturm of the nymphs and prevent their developing into the more specialized types. If the queen dies, there is no longer any “antiqueen” pheromone released and one or more of the nymphs develop into queens. The members of each colony will permit only one queen to survive, devouring any excess ones. Similarly, the loss of the king termite or a reduction in the number of soldiers permits other nymphs to develop into the specialized castes to replace them.
          Primer pheromones occur in mammals as well as in insects. When four or more female mice are placed in a cage, there is a greatly increased frequently of pseudopregnancy. If their olfactory bulbs are removed, this effect disappears. When more females are placed together in a cage, their estrous cycles become very erratic. However, if one male mouse is placed in the cage, his odor can initiate and synchronize the estrous cycles of all the females (the “whitten effect”) and reduce the frequency of reproductive abnormalities. Even more curious is the finding (the “bruce effect”) that the odor of a strange male will block pregnancy in a newly impregnated female mouse.

SEMUT-SEMUT JENGHIS KHAN

            Siapa yang tidak kenal Jenghis Khan ? dialah kaisar mongol yang terkenal dan gagah perkasa karena tidak saja berhasil menaklukkan seluruh daratan Tiongkok, tetapi juga merambah ke Eropa dan Asia Tengah.



Tahukah Anda Kunci Keberhasilannya ??



            Sewaktu masih muda, demikian kata sebuah hikayat, Jenghis Khan yang dikenal sebagai panglima perang dengan nama kecil Temucin, terlibat perang dengan musuhnya. Pertempuran berlangsung dahsyat; serang menyerang, serbu menyerbu, siasat lawan siasat, serta taktik lawan taktik. Hingga suatu titik, pasukan Temucin kalah, kocar-kacir dan tercerai berai.



            Temucin memilih bersembunyi dalam sebuah gua. Disana , dia melihat pemandangan yang menakjubkan : segerombolan semut yang sedang berusaha mengangkut sebongkah makanan melewati dinding batu setinggi kepalan tangannya, yang dimata semut-semut itu adalah tebing yang amat curam. Berulang kali ketika mereka hamper di puncak, makanan itu jatuh, sehingga mereka harus turun kembali ke dasar untuk beramai-ramai mengangkatnya.



            Mengamati perjuangan semut-semut yang tidak pernah putus asa itu merupakan keasyikan tersendiri bagi Temucin. Iseng-iseng , ia pun mulai menghitung , berapa kali mereka terjatuh bangun mengangkat makanan tersebut. Satu kali, dua kali, tiga kali, empat kali, sepuluh kali, lima belas kali, dua puluh kali…….. sampai lebih dari lima puluh kali, hingga hitungan yang kesekian, semut-semut itu pun berhasil.



            Temucin mendapatkan inspirasi batin sebuah pelajaran dari makhluk kecil yang begitu tekun dan tabah menghadapi kegagalan, melecut dan membangkitkan semangatnya. Baru kali ini dia dan pasukannya tercerai berai oleh musuh. Tidak boleh patah hati, lemah hati, dan kalah semangat.



            Menjelang petang, dengan mengendap-endap Temucin keluar dari persembunyiannya. Melihat situasi aman, diapun kembali ke markasnya. Lalu mulai menghimpun pasukannya, mengatur barisan dan berlatih dan menanamkan semangat semut-semut tadi sebagai suntikan motivasi.



            Konon dengan cara begitulah Temucin berhasil membangkitkan moral dan semangat pasukannya sehingga menjelma menjadi pasukan perang yang gagah berani dan menakutkan musuh-musuhnya.


Hikmah apa yang bisa kita petik dari kisah tersebut ??



Semut adalah makhluk kecil dan lemah yang sering tidak kita sadari keberadaannya. Namun dibalik semua itu, mereka punya semangat dan daya juang yang luar biasa. Sikap tidak pernah putus ada dan pantang menyerah menghadapi kegagalan layak dan patut kita teladani.



            “aku harus lebih perkasa daripada semut-semut yang aku lihat di gua !” itulah lecutan semangat Temucin kepada pasukannya. Dan benar saja, saat mereka bangkit dan berjuang , tidak tawar hati oleh kekalahan, tidak luntur semangat , menghadapi kegagalan dengan kepala tegak, mereka pun bisa berbalik dan menjelma menjadi pasukan yang luar biasa.

Kiranya kita juga bisa memetik hikmah darinya.

Satu frase yang biasa kita ucapkan dalam setiap doa adalah terima kasih. Tapi tahukah anda seberapa besar dampak ucapan “terima kasih” atau “ucapan syukur” bagi diri seseorang ? sebuah penelitian pernah dilakukan di Florida State University, Tallahasse, AS terhadap 137 mahasiswa untuk tahap pertama dan 218 untuk penelitian kedua. Hasilnya disimpulkan bahwa menyampaikan terima kasih bias memperbaiki perilaku dalam hubungan antar manusia.
“kelompok yang selalu mengucapkan terima kasih menjadi sangat kompak, karena saat mengucapkan hal itu mereka akan memusatkan perhatian pada hal baik yang telah dilakukan oleh orang tersebut” , Kata Nathaniel Lambert, wakil peneliti dari Universitas Tersebut.
            Menurut Nathaniel, mengatakan “terima kasih “ juga menguatkan hubungan dan membuat orang yang menyampaikannya merasa lebih bertanggung jawab terhadap pasangannya. Penelitian ini telah diterbitkan dalam jurnal psikologi internasional, Psychological Science.
            Dalam eksperimen psikologi yang dilakukan Prof. Robert Emmons dari Universitas California-Davis, Amerika mengenai peranan rasa syukur dalam kesehatan fisik dan emosi seseorang menunjukkan hasil yang signifikan.
            Hasilnya, orang-orang yang fokus pada rasa syukur dalam hidupnya merasa lebih gembira dan menjalani hari-hari dengan penuh vitalitas. Mereka juga lebih suka menolong dan menanggung konsekuensi dari tindakan mereka itu. Dalam penelitian lebih lanjut ia bahkan menemukan bahwa orang-orang yang selalu bersyukur jarang sakit, jarang marah, jarang mengalami depresi, dan kesedihan yang dalam.

ECO DESA SAUJANA

The ECO DESA SAUJANA project is one of the projects conducted by majis penghuni desa siswa saujana (MPDS) in collaboration with various agencies to promote the concept of sustainability amongst saujanarians and to achieves the sustainable hostel living concept.

           Sustainability is the ability to maintain the equilibrium of a certain process or state in a system. Our project is mainly to create and raise awareness on the need to take care of mother earth and provide information and knowledge on how this can be done. To achieve the objective of this project, we need you to reach out and join arms with us to enable our beved Saujana attain our cherished goal of “Zero Waste”.

            It is hoped that the tips and knowledge given in this book let will help you to live a “green life” and you will be motivated to speread the love for mother earth by passing the information contained therein to family and the community around you. Together, let us keep our beloved Nature from being destroyed by our own hands and bequeth her in a pristine state to our future generations.

GLOBAL CHANGES
           The increase in the average temperature of the earth’s near-surface air and oceans  caused by human activities or nature.
Source
            Industrial activities such as energy generation via coal burning by power plants, transportation and the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) for air conditioning and as a propellant in aerosols leads to the release of antropogenic gases that contribute to global warming.

Effect
            The increase in global temperature will cause the melting of the polar-caps in the Artic and the Antartic which lead to a rise in sea levels causing climate change on earth. Climate change has numerous effects among which are changes to the frequency and the intensity of storms and hurricanes. Instances of such changes are hurricane Katrina that struck the US in 2005 and the massive floods experienced by Malaysia in 2006.

Greenhouse Gases
         Greenhouse gases, which include water vapour, carbon dioxide and methane, are almost impermeable to solar radiation and strongly absorb and emit infrared radiation. The greenhouse effect refers to the heating of the planet’s surface due to the presence of greenhouse gases hat absorb and emit infrared radiation.
Tips On Overcoming The Greenhouse Effect
  •  Reduce the use of CFC-dependant products. Buy non-CFC aerosols as an alternative
  • Reduce electricity consumption
  • Use public transport or cycle or walk to destinations within a short-distance
  •  Reduce waste and practice recycling
  • Conserve natural resources by buying less and recycling more.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY


Definition

            Enegy efficiency is defined as the utilisation of less energy to provide the same level of energy efficiency. There are significant cost savings in terms of electricity consumption if products that are proven to be energy efficient are used.

TERDAPAT BEBERAPA LANGKAH YANG DITERAPKAN
(energy conservation tips for residents of saujana residential hall)

1.      Gunakan perkakas elektrik bila perlu saja dan tutup kembali bila tidak ada kepentingan (tidak digunakan kembali). (use electric appliances when needed and switch off when not in use.
2.      Komputer (computer)
  • Penggunaan mod tidur lebih efisien daripada mod sedia sekiranya mau ditinggalkan dalam jangka waktu yang singkat (choose standby mode or sleepy mode if you want to leave your computer for a short while rather then switching it off)
  • Tahukah anda bahwa skrin leper lebih menjimatkan daripada skrin yang menggunakan tiub katod ( a LCD monitor is more efficient than a cathode ray tube monitor)
  • Laptop menhematkan 30% tenaga berbanding PC biasa (a notebook uses 30% less energy than a normal PC)
3.      Bilik tidur (Room)
  • Gunakan lampu sis katil untuk membaca karena 1 lampu tersebut menggunakan 50% tenaga yang digunakan oleh lampu utama bilik (use the bedside lamp to need instead of using the main lamp)
  • Guna cahaya dari luar tingkap (Make full use of daylight)
  • Tanggalkan piag perkakas elektrik dari soket selepas guna (Disconnect the socket of electrical appliances after use)
4.      Setrika (Ironing)
-      Setrika wap menggunakan tenaga elektrik yang lebih daripada yang biasa (a steam iron uses more electricity than a normal iron does)
-      Setkan petunjuk setrika ke “low” atau tutup suisnya sekiranya tidak ingin menggunakannya buat masa yang singkat (set the ironing temperature at “low” when not in use for a short while
-      Gunakan setrika ringan karena  ia lebih cepat panas daripada setrika berat (a lighter iron heats faster than a heavier one)
-      Gosok pakaian dengan jumlah yang banyak dalam 1 masa (iron in large quantities)

Proses Penghasilan Kompos (The Process)
  1. Lubang segi empat tepat dipenuhkan dengan daun- daun kering dan sisa organik. (a rectangular shaped hole is filled up with dried leaves and organic waste)
  2. Lubang itu ditutup dengan papan dan daun- daun kering itu dibiarkan selama empat bulan untuk dikompos secara semulajadi tanpa sebarang bahan kimia. (the hole is covered by plywood and the waste is left to decompose for four months before certain chemicals are added to the decompose waste)
  3. Baja kompos yang dihasilkan akan digunakan sebagai baja kepada pokok- pokok yang telah ditanam di sekitar Saujana (The organic compost is now ready for use).
